Biography

Long-serving art critic for the London Evening Standard (from 1984 until his death from cancer in 2015). He was known to the wider public not only for his outspoken views on modern art, but also for the distinctive voice he used to, uh, outspeak them. The phonetic alphabet has not yet been invented which could do justice to his extraordinary vowels.

Trivia

He appeared in adverts for Stella Artois Dry in the mid-1990s.
