In 2002, UKGameshows.com did a poll to find out what and who were the greatest shows and hosts of all time.

In 2006 we did it again.

And four years are up, gameshow parliament has dissolved and now you: the reader, get to be judge and jury on over eighty years of TV and Radio history as we ask you to tell us here in 2010 what you believe are the greatest shows and hosts of all time.

It will likely be a difficult task to sift through it all and come up with your perfect tens – and get them into some sort of order. So whilst some other election or other may or may not be boring you, you’ve got the exact same deadline to make your decision – polls close Thursday May 6th 2200 BST. Our new Gameshow Parliament of the Top 30 shows and hosts will be sworn in in the following few weeks (i.e. it’ll take us up to a fortnight to sift through and write up the results). One may get asked to Buckingham Palace. Who knows?

The Voting

To go along with this poll’s political theme, we will be implementing the positional voting system. Don’t be scared, it’s the same system used in the Eurovision Song Contest (because it conjures up the idea of political voting. We don’t just throw this together at random, you know). You give your top show and/or host 12 points, 10 for second place, 8 for third, 7 for fourth, 6 for fifth, 5 for sixth all the way down in one point increments to 1 point for your tenth favourite thing.

If you can’t think of ten different things, then mark what you can from the top 12 points and work down as far as you can.

You are not required to give reasons for your choices but any you do make may get used as evidence in the final write-up.

The Rules

Top shows

  • You can only vote for shows that have been produced for the UK and shown in the UK. Shows that are basically repackages of foreign content with a commentary (such as Takeshi's Castle) are out, sorry.
  • Proper domestic versions of foreign shows are in, but please remember you are to judge on the merit of the UK version.
  • With a few exceptions, if UKGameshows.com has it, you can include it – we count most made for television and radio programmes with a strong competition element.
  • And, as they tend to be under-represented, you can include radio shows!
  • If there is a particular version of the same show you favour other others (for reasons of host, formatting etc.), please note it and we may make reference, but for the purposes of the poll they will all count towards the same show.

Top hosts

  • The host does not have to be UK born, but they must have hosted at least one show produced for the UK.
  • You should be judging on the merit of the shows they have hosted in the UK.
  • As it's an all-time poll, your choices may be alive or deceased.
  • We've had a couple of queries over this: yes, Ant and Dec can count as one entity. Other hosts are available.

How to Vote

Pretty simple, write down your choices clearly (one show/host to one line/paragraph would be terrific) and send them to poll2010@ukgameshows.com. Alternatively, Bother's Bar has a usable form.

If you would prefer to send two seperate mails, one with your shows and one with your hosts, that's fine but please only one full ballot per person.

Thanks very much for your participation!
