Synopsis
Pianist Bobby Crush hosts this rare ITV networked daytime quiz from TSW and asks three contestants a series of questions based on musicals.
We start off with the first round and it goes a little something like this, a clip of a song from a musical is played for about 15 seconds and then Bobby asks the contestants three questions based on that musical. Contestants then have to buzz in and attempt to say the answer, if the answer is correct they score a point, if it's wrong then the other two get a chance to buzz in and answer the question.
The second round is about finding connections, Bobby will asks the contestants two apparently unrelated questions, and then the third question asks what the connection is between the last two answers. Each question is on the buzzer again, open for the others if an incorrect answer is given, one point for right answers.
It's the celebrity round next, the guest star is hidden behind the logo and two parts of the picture have already been uncovered.
This round is a little different, reminds us of Telly Addicts as members of the public are asked to sing a song from a musical and then contestants are asked a question based on the clip they were shown. Whoever buzzes in with a correct answer gets a point and the chance to guess who the guest star is behind the logo for another point. Continue asking questions and removing segments until someone correctly guesses the guest star. Then a bonus question is asked about that celebrity and whoever buzzes in and answer correctly not only gains a point but also wins two complimentary tickets for a theatre show in their home town.
We then have to say goodbye to the contestant who scored the least amount of points at the end of part one, but they don't go home empty handed because they get a specialised Sound Like Music framed poster with their name, fellow opponents on that edition of the show and the host's name on it as well.
Part two begins with the remaining two contestants. A series of three part questions about a show or a person - beginning with a hard part first and then slowly getting easier. Each correct answer is worth a point.
The fifth round is a quickfire round where a series of rapid fire questions are set and contestants have to buzz in with an answer, one point if correct, goes to opponent if wrong for them to get a chance to answer correctly.
After the tune tells us it's the end of the round, we then have to say goodbye to the runner-up who not only goes home with a specialised framed poster, but also CDs, LPs and audio cassette tapes from the theatre shows of their choice.
The winner goes on to the final round called the Fabulous Five Jackpot. Five song titles are shown on the board and the contestant then has 30 seconds to name the show that each song is from. Each correct answer wins them £50, getting them all right wins them £250 and a weekend in London and two tickets for a West End show of their choice.
Shown on Tuesday to Friday afternoons at 3pm and as TSW's networked successor to That's My Dog, this was a OK show in a slot usually occupied by panel game shows such as Give Us a Clue, What's My Line? and Tell the Truth.
Bobby Crush is a fitting host for a show like this, he does it with such panache and also throws in some interesting facts for people who might not be such avid fans of musicals. The show itself is slow, it's clearly aimed at a more elderly audience who want something tranquil to watch with an afternoon cup of tea. Another music quiz from the same year - Keynotes - was a bright and breezy morning show, a much faster and energetic game. We would have loved to hear some more sample tunes from musicals on Sounds Like Music but each clip costs money and the show doesn't have a huge budget. hey, what can you do. The show was dropped after two series.
