From ITV's inception in 1955, ATV had the weekend franchise in London, and the Midlands franchise from Monday to Friday. Following a reorganisation of the ITV franchises, ATV served the Midlands for the full week from 29 July 1968, while relinquishing the London weekend franchise to LWT.
ATV became Central on 1 January 1982, as part of a restructuring in order to place more focus on its broadcast area.
