Biography

Composer, conductor and broadcaster on classical music. First making a name for himself with film soundtracks including The Pickwick Papers, To Cast a Dark Shadow and Billy Budd, he would go on to present Talking About Music on the Third Programme, then Radio 3 and finally Radio 4, from 1954 to 1992.

Trivia

Away from music, one of his major hobbies was driving fast sports cars, and he once told an interviewer "I’d rather have been Stirling Moss than Igor Stravinsky."
