Biography

Scottish actor known for Doctor Who, Broadchurch, Good Omens and lots of Shakespeare.

Trivia

His birth name is David McDonald, but another actor already had that name, so he took his stage name from the Pet Shop Boys singer Neil Tennant.

He has twice appeared on British stamps: his portrayal of Hamlet featured in the 2011 set celebrating the Royal Shakespeare Company, and naturally he also turned up on the 2013 Doctor Who set.

When he guest-hosted Have I Got News for You for the first time in autumn 2015, he became the 100th person to do so. However, he was officially the 99th guest host, as John Torode and Gregg Wallace, who co-hosted an episode in spring 2011, are officially considered one guest host (the 75th, if you want to know) rather than two. The honour of being the official 100th guest host instead fell to comedienne Tracey Ullman, in spring 2016.
