Grampian began broadcasting on 30 September 1961 as the ITV station for the North of Scotland. Most of its programmes aired only locally, including Gaelic-language programmes.
Grampian was acquired by Scottish Media Group (now STV Group plc) in 1997. On 30 May 2006, both Grampian and Scottish Television were rebranded on-air as STV.
