After losing its franchise to Carlton in the 1991 ITV franchise auction, it ceased broadcasting on 31 December 1992 and became an independent production company.
Thames was acquired by the Pearson conglomerate in mid-1993, and in 2001 became part of FremantleMedia (simply Fremantle since 2018), owned by the Luxembourg-based RTL Group. In 2003, it was merged with fellow subsidiary Talkback to form TalkbackThames; programmes made by this company are listed in the Talkback category. The "Thames" credit was revived in 2012 for Fremantle's non-comedy entertainment programmes.
